I was at the helm before I could even ride a bike. Driving boats since the age of 3 or 4, and working extra at marine companies by the age of 12 to turn wrenches and learn the trade from the ground up, the sea, hulls, and engines have been my entire life. Today, in the advanced marine surveying industry, it is widely recognized that my word carries the absolute most weight, regardless of the vessel or subject. This authority is not theoretical—it has been forged in the field, on the racecourses, and under extreme pressure.

When I certify a vessel, it is not an opinion. It is an uncompromising technical reality. I have always worked by the motto, whether I am racing or surveying a multi-million dollar yacht: "2nd place is the 1st loser." There is no room for being second best, and there is zero margin for error.

⚖️ The Integrity That Set an Industry Standard

In 1989–1990, I worked in boat sales. However, I quickly realized a fundamental problem: I simply knew too much about marine mechanics and hull integrity to sell used boats with a clear conscience. I saw the hidden flaws that others missed, and I chose truth over profit. That realization launched my career as an independent marine surveyor.

🏁 Extreme Performance: 150 Knots & Offshore Sailing

I have a highly successful racing career behind me. At just 15 years old, I received a special dispensation to race in the F4 class, hitting 85 knots—and since then, I have pushed the limits to an extreme 150 knots. I have built and optimized high-performance racing engines (both inboards and outboards) where margins are non-existent and materials are pushed to their absolute limits.

In parallel, I have competed in offshore sailing at the highest level, including several Gotland Runt races. Whether it's rig tension in a nighttime storm or material fatigue at a maximum load of 150 knots, I know exactly where weaknesses hide. Furthermore, as a certified PADI Dive Instructor, I understand the anatomy of a vessel all the way down below the waterline to the seabed.

🌊 Forged in the Field: Båtjouren

(Marine Emergency Response)

Many know me best from Båtjouren (Birkes Båtjour). Heading out in severe weather, facing stressed boat owners, and solving acute engine failures on the spot—that is where true marine engineering is tested. We were the first in Sweden to offer authorized mobile marine service. Thousands of emergency call-outs have given me an irreplaceable, hands-on database of how systems actually fail in the real world.

🛠️ The Innovations That Shaped Modern Shipyards

Beyond field operations, I actively developed the handling methods that the entire industry now takes for granted:

Värmdö BoatCare: We were not only the first to introduce systematic osmosis treatment; we also developed the hull polishing and maintenance systems that are now the standard at modern Swedish shipyards.
Tollare Varf: Here, we revolutionized boat handling. We were the very first in the industry to offer climate-controlled indoor yacht storage. We were also the first to use hydraulic boat trailers and the first to run engines in tubs for freshwater flushing and winterization—methods that are now industry standards everywhere. We also created the ultimate premium VIP concept: the client left their keys at home, and we picked up the boat and returned it ready for the season with a fully stocked fridge.

🔍 The Ultimate Authority

As a Mechanical Engineer and specialist in NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) using ultrasound, I combine hard field experience with advanced diagnostics. I have a long history with the Swedish Council for the Education and Training of Yachtsmen (NfB) from the era of appointed examiners, and over the years I have conducted advanced professional training for maritime licenses, including Master Class VIII and Engineer Class B.

As the Chairman of the Swedish Association of Marine Surveyors (B.B.R.), I have dedicated my time to shaping and upholding the strict quality standards that surveyors operate by today.
